Rarely does a remix or reimagination capture my attention, but this complete re-telling of “Cope” does just that and more. The songs are essentially the same, but acoustic versions of what was found on the dark and heavy “Cope”, but the arrangements are slightly different and the tone of the music somehow changes the impact of the lyrics. While Cope was definitely crushing and made you “cope” with the story unfolding in the lyrics, Hope makes you feel a little more in charge and “hope”ful that things will end differently. It’s amazing how much our attitudes can be shaped by outside forces; maybe that was the point of Manchester Orchestra’s exercise in these companion pieces.
