Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band
“Trout Mask Replica”
Sometimes there is an album that you recognize is undoubtedly a classic/masterpiece, but you don’t know if it receives a perfect grade in your book, but rarely do you question if maybe that masterpiece should receive the lowest marks possible. This album is the exception, and by “exception” I don’t even mean to the rule above, I mean it in comparison to the entirety of music that preceded it. There are moments of traditional genres (jazz, folk, blues, etc.) but as soon as you spot them the very foundation is ripped apart and turned into that all encompassing chaos of a genre known as “avant-garde”. I see this album with more positives than negatives, but even after numerous listens, I know I haven’t unlocked all of its secrets… and probably never will.
